John Lewis York is the latest out of town department store to be opened by the nation’s favourite retailer. The shop is around two thirds of the area of a standard full size John Lewis department store and is arranged on two levels rather than the more usual three. It displays all their latest products, brands and shopfitting ideas and makes a dramatic introduction for local folk who are not yet familiar with the John Lewis experience. The building itself is their lowest carbon footprint store to date, incorporating low energy LED lighting throughout the retail areas and solar voltaic panels on the roof. It has been awarded a BREEAM outstanding rating. I photographed the shop on opening day for the architects, Brooker Flynn
